An introduction to Colin Summers

Your career to date?
After running my own retail business from leaving school till my late 20’s, I felt a career change was in order. This was due to having a young family and wanting to spend time with them.

I became a man from the Pru in May 1983 and remained with them until redundancy in 1999. I held various positions with them as district agent, manager and finally as Corporate Pension specialist. I then moved to Britannic Assurance again as Corporate Pension specialist however after a further redundancy, I decided it was time to become my own boss again, if only to stop the redundancies. I became a full time IFA in October 2003 specialising in Investment and Pension advice.

I have spent my whole career dealing with the public and hopefully will continue to retirement. My clients appreciate my ability to explain complex matters to them in simple terms, allowing them to make informed decisions.

If you could offer one piece of financial advice to an individual, what would it be and why?
Look after your capital and be aware of Inflation.

Deposit based returns at present are below inflation so yo are losing purchasing power.

Which areas of financial planning do you feel an individual should be addressing in the next 2 years?
Pensions as we are all living longer.

What is the most common mistake you find individuals make in financial planning?
Not reviewing investments/pensions on a regular basis.
